Nanny and Maid working hours – Ramadan

Ramadan working hours for nannies and maids

During the Holy Month of Ramadan in the UAE, working hours for private sector employees are reduced by two hours per day, as mandated by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE).

However, this statutory reduction does not automatically extend to domestic workers, including nannies and maids.

The UAE’s domestic labor laws do not specify reduced working hours for domestic staff during Ramadan. Therefore, it’s at the employer’s discretion to adjust schedules. Despite the lack of legal obligation, it’s considerate to offer flexible working hours to accommodate the physical demands of fasting and the increased household activities typical during Ramadan. This is obviously very important if she is Muslim.

Employers are encouraged to implement flexible schedules, allowing domestic workers time for rest during fasting periods. This could involve adjusting work hours to provide breaks during the hottest parts of the day or aligning tasks with the workers’ energy levels. Such adjustments not only demonstrate empathy but also promote a harmonious household environment.

Regarding public holidays like Eid, the UAE’s domestic labor laws do not mandate time off for domestic workers. However, providing time off or additional compensation during these periods is a gesture that acknowledges their hard work and respects their cultural practices.

In summary, while the law does not require reduced working hours or mandatory leave for domestic workers during Ramadan and Eid, offering flexibility and rest periods is a compassionate practice that reflects the spirit of the Holy Month.
