Nanny salary. Maid salary.
What should I pay the nanny? This is probably the question we hear most frequent.
Hiring a nanny in the UAE involves several considerations, including legal requirements and fair compensation. Ensuring your nanny is paid appropriately not only complies with the law but also reflects her experience and the cost of living. Here’s a comprehensive guide on what you should pay your nanny in the UAE.
Recommended Salary Based on Experience
While adhering to the legal minimum is essential*, paying your nanny based on her experience is highly recommended. A competitive salary not only attracts better candidates but also ensures job satisfaction and loyalty.
For a live-in nanny, we recommend the following nanny salary range:
- AED 1,800 to AED 4,000 per month.
This range accounts for varying levels of experience and qualifications. Nannies with extensive experience, certifications, or specialised skills (like early childhood education or special needs care) should be compensated at the higher end of this range, and sometimes even above. Nannies holding a midwife degree with experience, are also normally compensated above this range.
For a live-out nanny, you should add extra compensation for housing and transportation costs:
- Base Salary: AED 1,800 to AED 4,000 per month
- Housing Allowance: +800 AED per month
- Transportation Allowance: Variable, depending on your location
*(you can check minimum salary bands per nationality, on each embassy’s website)

Transportation Allowance
The transportation allowance can vary significantly based on your location and the availability of public transportation. If you live in an area with ample public transportation, a reasonable amount might be between AED 200 to AED 400. However, if your area is less accessible, you might need to provide a higher allowance or even cover full transportation costs, which could range up to AED 600 or more.
Food Allowance
Food is another critical aspect to consider. Some people choose to bring their staff along for shopping, while others provide a food allowance. Our recommendation is to add:
- AED 500 per month for food. Please note that if you live in an expensive area, this amount might have to be adjusted.
Summary
When deciding a nanny’s salary in the UAE, it is important to:
- Adhere to the legal minimum salaries based on nationality.
- Pay based on experience, with a recommended range of AED 1,800 to AED 4,000 for live-in nannies.
- For live-out nannies, add AED 800 for housing and a variable amount for transportation.
- Include a food allowance of AED 500 per month if meals/food/toiletries are not provided.
By considering these factors, you ensure fair and competitive compensation for your nanny, fostering a positive and productive employment relationship.
Note that maids and nannies have similar salaries, however experienced nannies on the higher end of the range is generally more well paid than maids.
As a reference point, please note that according to Tadbeer, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) has specified 2,156 AED per month as the average salary for maids.
